Our Sourcing Principles

With complete supply chain transparency, we are transforming the way people think about tea.

The vast majority of tea drank globally is bought at tea auctions. Tea supply chains may become convoluted and opaque if improperly handled, which may have detrimental effects on the environment and society.
We don't merely think that teas from a specific origin and garden taste better. To obtain them, we go straight to the source. By improving traceability, eliminating the middlemen promotes transparency. In order to better assist producers and their communities, it also enables us to establish trusting relationships with them. We support this by implementing strict, ethical procurement procedures that apply to all of our suppliers.

Directly Sourced, Traceable Tea

By directly procuring single garden, single origin, fully traceable tea and fostering customer demand for quality, we will continue to lead the way in a sustainable tea future.

Our Goals and Commitments:

  • By 2025, our entire line will have 100% traceability.
  • At least 95% of our selection should consist of single garden or single origin teas.
  • Establish a goal for our range's direct sourcing in 2025.

    Consumer Awareness
  • By 2025, the garden name will appear on the packaging and website of all single garden teas.

    Consumer Awareness
  • By 2025, all supply chain participants had ratified the new Responsible Sourcing Code of Conduct.
  • By 2028, all tier 1 providers of tea, herb packaging, and teaware will have passed our updated SAQ evaluation.
  • Paying fair price

We purchase the best teas from the greatest growers we are aware of and pay the premium prices that their quality demands. Our methodology allows more money to reach tea makers and their communities directly by eliminating the intermediaries.
For our own UK operations, we are a Living Wage certified employer. To create a livable wage across the tea supply chain, we are collaborating with the ETP and the larger industry.

    Our Goals and Commitments:
Guaranteeing a minimum livable salary or income for all direct growers and their employees in our tea and herbal supply chain. (The goal is related to our organization fulfilling its obligation by doing or paying more to make up our portion of the income gap or living wage, depending on how much we buy from the producer.)

Empowering Our Producers & Their Communities

We're dedicated to fostering close ties with our producers and working with them and their communities to address environmental and socioeconomic concerns that are significant to both of us.

    Our Goals and Commitments:

    Our Producers
establishing a program for supplier involvement and the related objectives by 2025.

Supporting Communities: By 2025, assist two community initiatives in our primary sourcing areas.

    Championing Regenerative Farming

We made the decision a few years ago to buy organic teas and herbs whenever we could. Tea gardens can become more climate change resilient and greenhouse gas emissions can be decreased by using sustainable agricultural methods like organic and regenerative farming. Additionally, we've observed that they frequently accompany better-tasting tea. Since chemical fertilizers account for 75% of carbon emissions in the production of tea, giving priority to teas cultivated in this manner also lowers the carbon emissions related to our tea.

Our teas are either Soil Association Certified Organic or SHANG stamp "Made Without Pesticides" because we use a dual stamp system.

    Our Goals and Commitments:

Maintain the distribution of SHANG TEA "Made Without Pesticides" and Soil Association Certified Organic.
By the end of 2024, 80% of our range will feature one of these stamps.
